Opportunities for Interns
Iowa Pride Network (IPN) welcomes undergraduate and graduate college and university level interns who have an interest in the mission of our organization. Interns assist with the daily work and implementation of IPN programs. IPN will also work with students who wish to secure credit for their internship experience.
Position: Iowa Pride Network Intern
Organization Description: Iowa Pride Network (IPN) is a nonprofit organization governed by youth and adults that empowers youth to fight homophobia and transphobia in high schools and colleges. We work to improve the quality of life among LGBTQA students by reducing isolation through a statewide network of GSA clubs and coalitions and by providing leadership opportunities and organizing projects centered on social justice. Since 2003, IPN has increased the number of GSAs in the state from approximately 20 to over 120; and has become a national leader in the area of LGBTQA student leadership development and safe school policies.
Mission: Iowa Pride Network works directly with LGBTQQA youth to cultivate advocates and leaders who fight homophobia and transphobia and strive for social justice.
Job Description/Responsibilities: Intern is expected to support civil rights for LGBTQA persons and their full participation in society with full rights and responsibilities of citizenship and to positively represent the Iowa Pride Network in the implementation of its objectives. Interns will assist staff with presentations, coalition building, outreach, communications, and various projects and events. Responsibilities could include:
- Coalition building and outreach to prospective organizations and individuals
- Basic office assistance, including database management, updating resources, mailings and meeting planning
- Help plan presentations and coordinate IPN’s six major statewide events
- Organize and plan the Annual Fall GSA Registration Drive
- Conduct grant research and assist with grant proposals
- Create, design, and implement the new edition of the Thinking Queerly Coalition Curriculum (Summer Intern)
Qualifications:
- College or university undergraduate or graduate student
- Background in any of the following, but not limited to: journalism, mass communications, marketing, business, law, political science, social work, or women & gender studies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team, be well-organized, detail-oriented, dependable and meet deadlines.
- Problem solving skills and ability to work and stay poised under pressure.
- Experience with Microsoft Office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database software. Experience with website design and 2.0 internet tools are desirable.
- Strong working knowledge of issues regarding LGBT advancement or demonstrated capacity to understand issues quickly and competently.
Supervision:
- Interns report to the Executive Director and/or Outreach Coordinator.

Work Schedule:
- Fall, spring and summer semesters
- Available minimum of 10 hours per week; work at least 4 consistent hours between 9 and 5; negotiable and flexible schedule; preferably in the Des Moines office, but flexible depending on nature of work.
